YouTube-dl has been taken down

Just got this message when trying to download youtube-dl:

Access denied

Due to a ruling of the Hamburg Regional Court, access to this website is blocked. Zugriff gesperrt

Aufgrund eines Urteils des Landgerichts Hamburg ist der Zugriff auf diese Website gesperrt.

The fact that you are blocked from visiting a website does not mean that it has been “taken down”.

I don’t know exactly what the domain you’re trying to access is but most likely this block is at a DNS level, so just stop using the DNS server provided by your ISP (which there is no reason to do anyway) and use something like https://www.dns0.eu/ or one of the many other alternatives instead.

Also, in my opinion, yt-dlp is better.

https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp is the way to go.

Good thing youtube-dlp exists!

Next time this happens just type "<thing you wanted> mirror" into your search engine. Usually that will give you some more options. Geoblocking tools is not going to stop unfortunately.

Or, you know, maybe don’t use DNS servers that break the Internet, and maybe don’t rely on “mirrors” that you have no idea who is operating them.

Unfortunately I had just downloaded youtube-dl but to the wrong directory and in hindsight stupidly decided to delete it and re-download...

So get https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp instead?

https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl works just fine for me and so does http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/. What's your DNS?

The official website is what was taken down

What is the address of the official website?

Yt-dl.org

I see. According to the Web Archive, this website stopped working all the way in November 2023, and http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/ now contains all the same content as the old one and is the new "official" website.

The infamous court strikes yet again. They must get so much money

Mirrors?

Why would anyone use an online service for this anyways. Why not just use VLC?

Ahh, Germany.
