Ask HN: Niches where contractors typically work on monthly retainers

The title says it all. Currently working in a niche as a consultant where I can ask a retainer and bill against it and then ask for a new retainer. This has the disadvantage that there are periods without income requiring me to hedge by cold calling to sign on new clients. Thinking of pivoting to another niche where monthly retainers with no carry over are common.
