Sharing deepfake porn could lead to lengthy prison time under proposed law

It's already covered by multiple harassment laws, defamation laws and possibly revenge porn laws depending on your state. When you see a redundant bill like this, expect it to be a trojan horse for something that might not be justifiable otherwise.

There are laws against assault and murder but we still have specific laws covering things like food safety or building codes, too. This comes up when the existing laws make it hard to prosecute cases when there’s some requirement like specific knowledge and intent which is hard to prove, or when waiting for a particular burden of proof requires serious harm to have occurred (e.g. you suffer penalties for any DUI because few people want to wait until an unsafe driver actually kills someone).

This is a growing problem so it’s unsurprising that legislators are hearing from constituents that victims need better tools.

Probably, there's already plenty of cases where the First Amendment is just ignored like with CSAM or copyright.

Should it? No. Could it? all too possible.

If the courts don’t respect our fundamental rights, should we still respect the courts?

There are already laws against sexual abuse.
