Why did the biggest ape go extinct?

We have a model Gigantopithicus in a case in our anthropology and natural science museum, on the UofIowa campus! Been there since I was small.

It's impressive.

In fact the whole museum is impressive. Put together late 1800's or early 1900's by old-school botanists and biologists who roamed the globe, the Mammal Hall even has a blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling of the main hall!

It would be pretty crazy to see a 3m ape roaming around. Evolution is quite interesting.
