Oh wow. I forgot it existed.

I used to use that website a long time ago when I was looking to get into design / web development, I think it predates me visiting HN daily which replaced it.

Crazy to think about actually, over the many years of my online life, I have sites that I visit every day, there are always a few but they have changed over the years.

While this is a shame, there was neither good content nor engagement. I mean, when you run a search for "DesignerNews", the first sub-result is "DesignerNews is almost dead", which seemed to always be true.

I do have a Google/Alexa/something app published that reads the top stories from DesignerNews, which will definitely break, so I'll have to dig around and take it offline.

Are there any alternatives?

It came up regularly in ”HN but for $x industry“ questions, e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31902969 but you’re right I never saw much traction.

https://www.designernews.co/ "Designer News is transforming and joining the We Work Remotely family. Soon Designer News will no longer be available but we have great news, with the power of We Work Remotely, we’ll still help you find and list the best remote jobs."

Is it open sourced?

No, but https://lobste.rs is. https://github.com/lobsters/lobsters
