I think the goals are pretty much the same, but the ways of getting there is vastly different and in my opinion Liveview has much more potential in creating apps that feel alive.

The big backdraw of Liveview is that you have to use Elixir, but at the same time Elixir is the reason why it works so well. You can use something similar in another language but the performance will suck in comparison.
