New Features in Fedora Asahi Remix

I've seen plenty of idiots on here, but it's rare that I see anything terribly toxic on HN.
At this point, I think LinkedIn is by far the most toxic place I have to look at now.

I can understand why you block HN, because of traffic flow, but not for content.
As I mentioned in another comment further down, I was not aware of the redirect message before posting what I felt was a great blog post summarizing the recent advancements in Fedora Asahi Remix (my daily driver for software development and personal use).
While I might not agree with all their stances, there’s no doubt that there are some extremely talented people working on Asahi.
Webcam and Speaker support were the two big missing pieces for me, necessitating switch to Mac occasionally. And with the new energy-aware scheduling, it’s gonna last forever on my minimal usage.
(Yes, I'm aware there are Asahi Debian options, but the official support is always better.)
Damn shame, but good to know about it now, rather than later.
##.hnsucksNo nastygram with it on or off. Do they know me to be a great person? (Just kidding, even if I am)
Stuff that I disagree with on HN is easy to ignore.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
> Hi! It looks like you might have come from Hacker News.
Well Hi to you too!
> We're going to be blunt: Hacker News is increasingly a haven for alt-right trolls and hateful abusers, and the administrators have demonstrated that they have no interest in improving the situation despite repeated pleas by multiple people, in public and in private, even going as far as deploying countermeasures to prevent us from blocking HN traffic. A significant number of Hacker News commenters have repeatedly directed harassment, abuse, doxxing, and bigotry at multiple Asahi Linux developers, and much of this content remains available and not flagged or downvoted.
This appears to be a work of complete fantasy. It appears to me that inappropriate content is normally flagged. If they don't think its flagged fast enough then helping flag it faster/better it seems an entirely reasonable thing to do. Be the change and all that.
> The open source community cannot stand to accept this kind of conduct. Many of us are members of minorities and regularly subject to abuse by these kinds of online communities. Without diverse developers, there would be no Asahi Linux.
I'm still not clear on how whatever harassing conduct is related to hacker news? Are people keying hacker news wuz here on people's cars or are they merely seeing a spike in negative activity immediately followed by traffic from hacker news. This would be somewhat normal. ANYTHING that draws a lot of interest is going to bring with it a small minority of assholes. This woulds be true if they were discussed on reddit, twitter, or cnn.
> These abusers may not use curse words or blatant slurs as often in HN as they do in other communities, but the messages they spread and brigade on the site are just as hateful and damaging as what you will find in other darker corners of the web, and anyone familiar with such conduct will have no trouble noticing the prevalence of dog whistling, bad faith arguments...,
Who is even talking politics on threads regarding a linux distro in the first place?
> ... and discourse aimed at marginalizing minorities under the guise of polite discussion in many HN threads. We understand that not all Hacker News users are like this.
What?
> However, by letting these vocal users run undeterred, Y Combinator and Daniel Gackle are tacitly approving of this abuse and hurting the reputation of the entire site and its userbase.
Are there some examples of negative actions on this forum?
> If you want to support us and what we do and you are a Hacker News user, please bring this up and demand change within the community.
I already flag people being assholes now. I don't understand what change is needed because I personally haven't noticed a problem. Some examples would of course be helpful.
> As things stand today, we consider Hacker News traffic to be a net negative for the project (yes, it's that bad), and we kindly ask you to move on to the next story.
Certainly
As someone who uses Fedora Asahi Linux exclusively for both microservice software development and personal use, I merely wanted to share this well-written post on the latest developments for Fedora Asahi Remix. I believe them to be quite impressive and noteworthy.
And while I do not share the same sentiment in the message displayed to redirected users from Hacker News, I respect any viewpoint and right to display such a message. I can only assume that there was good reason for them to do so. However, I would have preferred the message include a link that readers could click on to allow them to read the underlying blog post.
It seems fantastically more likely that they simply don't know how to deal with the modern internet and are freaking out and alienating people. A small but very prolific and energetic portion of the population are rude little psychos spewing trash every time they open their mouth and if there is anything whatsoever different about you from their perspective they will heap abuse upon you.
Absolutely anything which draws a wide enough audience to your little neck of the woods will bring a certain amount of interest from the offensive set even when the community itself is well policed and functional.
Twitter is probably the best example of this because rather than one twitter there are are a billion twitters each centered around its own users preferences and circles. This enables social circles resembling malignant tumors to act as magnifying glasses focusing hate on individuals like demented children burning ants. Not only does it not do much to police such it actively encourages it because the boss is part of the malignancy.
Hacker News is the inverse. There is ONE hacker news and it would never tolerate posts of the sort you see on twitter. The only available venue for bad behavior is in the comments and generally anything really bad is killed quickly. It is certainly not a venue for alt-right trolls. That's not an incorrect statement its a malicious lie.
If after something is posted on hacker news some little psycho outside the venue of this website decides to harass Asahi devs that is basically both impossible and unreasonable to blame on this site. It's like blaming the weatherman for the rain. This is what the internet is like now. Nobody can stop someone from reading a link here and then getting on twitter. Submit potential solutions to your favorite lawmaker because it wont be fixed here.
Also, weirdly, they're still sending the full content of the page when they get that referrer. I didn't even see the text about HN initially because Dark Reader messed with the CSS in a way that pushed that into the footer.
aren't we told from day 1 to either grow a thick skin if you want to be online or stop posting?
i learned to be lurker for more than a decade before i joined in a public forum to put my points. That gave me some idea about the stuff happening and its not just one platform but the overall internet.
why do people feel offended? Like i understand if i am part of a minority AFK and i am making my preferences known publicly. That just means i am keeping myself open to attacks. That is just how things work. I cant keep the cake and eat it too. Either stop posting and turn a hermit and stay safe in the cocoon or face the harsh reality of anonymous forums.
again, i am not advocating violence or harassment. I am just saying this is part of the internet design that people will target you. I have done some trolling many years ago and the idea was to mess with people's heads. That gave me some insight on how trolls work and since then, i wont be trolled or harassed.
why do people take the high place of "no one should offend me or harass me". Yes dang is doing a good job and maybe it can be better, i don't know about that myself (cant really comment on it) but people should grow up.
Humans have made fun of each other since day 1. This is what humans do.
Again, i am not advocating harassment. I am just saying that we should work to reduce it but to imagine it shouldn't happen to you specifically is just wishful thinking and most importantly, people should not take hateful comments and harassment to heart. That is the job of trolls. If you get harassed, well they have just won. Don't let trolls win
Seems like white people complaining they are never the target of racism. Have some empathy.
I'm quite pleased to know that the Asahi Linux team-- one of the most impressive and productive hacker teams I've read about in awhile-- apparently spends 0% of their busy schedule flagging low-effort bullshit on HN.
I went looking through threads looking for misbehavior and what I found was instances with hundreds of comments and 2 flagged people being assholes. This is on the overall damn fine work for a public forum.
