Too bad. It was far from perfect, but it had potential. Despite everyone crying about fake news and polarization, news that is factual and too the point doesn't sell and no one looks at it.

What deserves recognition is that they have a clear and concise communication about this.

I was excited, but no web version, so, I rarely used it. Too bad all links I shared would probably die.

Yeah, a web version would increase my usage a lot.

Right before Artifact released, i was working on a similar NewsApp and I released LetMeKnow.news on Google Play and App Store some months ago. I use AI to summarize news articles, users are able to comment articles, create polls and vote, like/share. I would love if folks can check it out and provide feedback.

It's a new app, please be easy on me :). I am working hard to make it a great app, would appreciate your feedback! I am currently working on clustering/grouping similar articles, this feature will be released in 2-3 weeks.

Thanks!

Doesn't seem to be available in my region :/

Can’t even view the app information in the app store as it’s “not available in your region”. Perhaps the website could be clear about what regions it is available in?

Reading articles was restricted to the in-app web view which was chock full of ads. By the time they got around to allowing you to use an external browser, I’d moved on.

Any good alternatives besides Feedly?

I loved that Artifact offered Dark Mode on it's articles.

I've been working on www.forth.news.

It's not a 1:1 replacement -- Forth is a news feed for news, more like a social feed, but all the posts come from verified journalists. We're still bringing on news orgs/reporters, hitting local to world, and various niches in between.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

For an rss reader, I prefer inoreader. The ability to create feeds for content that does not have rss is great.

Inoreader user for 5+ years. Love them.

A very different approach, but same fundamental concept: https://brutalist.report

Have you considered an area where additional news sources can be suggested, or perhaps allowing subscribers to introduce additional news sites? This is a great site, and I use it regularly, but because it is curated by you I lose some control and ease of access. As an example, you include sites like the Intercept and Fox News, I suspect to introduce balance, but do not for example include Al Jazeera. This leads to your site aggregating with the inherent bias from your sources.

That's a fair suggestion. I'll see about including some functionality for users to include additional news sites.

In the meantime, we did used to carry Al Jazeera but their endpoint had broken for some time. I've re-enabled it now to begin ingesting.

yes that dark mode was a great feature. as was the 'mark as title as clickbait' that rephrased the headline without having to read the article.

Nextcloud running the News app [1] on your own server, either an old laptop/desktop or a SBC like a Raspberry/Orange/Banana/${fruit} Pi. You'll get total control over whatever you do with the thing, as much 'free' cloud storage as you want and loads of other possible services. It runs fine on a Raspberry Pi 4 or one of the equivalent boards from other manufacturers.

Source: I've been running this before the Owncloud/Nextcloud split, it works as advertised.

I built something a little different but might strike a chord with Artifact users: https://chiefofstaffhq.com. Would love feedback.

Anyone know how they aggregated news?

Obviously. I had called it out right when they launched it.

Being right about a startup failing, particularly a social platform, is like hitting the broad side of a barn.
