I gave up mostly.

Nowadays I use containers for the services, like redis, postgres, etc. But the app runs locally for dev. Works fine for standard web stuff.

Same for me. Locally I try to use asdf-vm for handling different versions of stuff needed.

Would recommend checking out mise. It's a newer clone of asdf. I switched due to bugs I was running into with using asdf to manage versions of python.
