Ask HN: Why was HN down for a few hours?

m5 hosting reported a "DDoS attack against a popular web site we host"

another submission notes that the https cert is newly cloudfare so looks like HN is using it to avoid the DDOS

You got it. Sorry everyone. Still working on it.

Any chance we can just keep HN on Cloudflare going forward and turn on caching for non-logged-in users?

I hope not. Cloudflare seems to block users from Cuba and Iran.

Thailand Mobile is also largely blocked..

Was fun, could not use around half the websites I am normally using

If HN is on Cloudflare, where will people report that Cloudflare is down?

Yes, this was the longest period in the last 6 months.

Had to visit twitter to be sure I wasn't the only one

I hope dang will take sometime to explain why it was down

We might learn a few things :)

It was painful, usually, HN is where one goes to find out if a service is down, I also used Twitter to double check it wasn't just me.

Sad site is down.

Happy my productivity is up today.
