Did they miss that part where OpenAI fired their CEO and almost every employee threatened to quit, and all Microsoft could do was hope Sam Altman would make it back to save OpenAI or hope that they all wanted to take new jobs at Microsoft (which apparently the employees mostly didn't want)? That would really suggest that they are pretty independent.
