I’ll again plug the P9 network file sharing protocol (from Plan 9) as a fuse/smb/nfs/webdav alternative that is simple to implement and fairly performant, used by Microsoft to provide file access across the WSL boundary with little overhead. I didn’t know about it until a few years ago and people I tell are always surprised to learn about it.
