Selecting a link changes the URL. The back button takes you to the previous URL. They didn’t break the back button.

Edit: the issue is that searching changes the URL via push state, once per character typed. I didn’t search so didn’t notice.
Also, searching scrolls back to the top on every character, which is jarring and frustrating.
