Ask HN: Management Principles for Research Teams?
So the question is about how to manage (principles, methods, tools) a team of researchers. To be more specific multidisciplinary research team.
I'm part of a research team at a startup with about 6 members in our team. Since I was one of the first member, (originally only me and my manager) we had a discussion about how to more efficiently manage the research team, for the upcoming year.
We went from 2 people to 6 in this year, which means we're doing good. However it have also caused issues with things such as visibility, especially when someone is stuck. Because the multidisciplinary nature of the team, someone being stuck can also take a while to get resolved. (the discipline range from neuroscience, AI to robotics)
We currently have weekly meetings(which imo is too long) and simple bullet point reporting at end of week for what everyone have been doing the week. It works, but maybe there's better ways out there.
I'm aware of methods such as Scrum or Kanban for software development, but the nature of research work makes estimating how long/hard a task will be, near impossible, so those methods are limited in its usefulness.
I was wondering if there were some good materials, or anecdotes, one could use as reference.
Thank you in advance
