Master tapes of the TV series 'Reboot' found but no playback device exists

I'm confused. The device in question seems to be readily available at auctions, for rent, or even indirect as transfer service, yet the article seems to suggest these are somehow impossible to find?

Feels to me, like a either click bait, or the author was unaware of the reality of the situation and didn't do any research before hand.

At this point several youtubers with the equipment have offered to do a transfer for free.

So it seems like a solved problem.

They're fishing for someone donating the hardware free.

Shouldn't the title be corrected on HN to reflect the article?

It is not stated that no device exists - just that don't have access to one, as indicated by the title on the article itself: "Digital master tapes of the 3D series 'Reboot' found, but a playback device is lacking"

It might be true, I guess, that no such device exists, but that's not what the article says anyways.

Reboot was one of the first completely 3D CGI television shows, starting in 1994 .[0]

"The recordings are on a rare digital tape format called D1, a technology that Weldon said was cutting edge and rare when Mainframe was using it. ... Weldon and Lin have since put out a call on social media for a working Bosch BTS D1 deck that would allow them to play the tapes, and incorporate them into their documentary." [1]

Oh man I loved that show so much.

I liked finally seeing what the (<>) reboot logo was, a composition of 'primitives'[0] which is also the band that played at Enzo's bday party, IIRC.
