Meta's news ban in Canada remains as Online News Act goes into effect

I'm not surprised to see a law that favors entrenched corporate media at the expense of small local media. It's been that way as long as I can remember.
I think we'd have been better off with a law that said Facebook needs to serve local news for X% of the (news) content. That would invigorate local media and, I think, be more palatable for Facebook.
Beyond that, I would assume that there should be a method of identifying people who have actually studied journalism and it's role in society, for example, with a masters or doctorate in journalism and who have been actively engaged in the industry should be suitable.
Surprised to see that Twitter isn't covered by this as well? Surely they meet the requirements of "companies that operate social media platforms or search engine websites in Canada - where news is often shared and disseminated - and that have a total global revenue of more than C$1bn in a calendar year."
This legislation is disgustingly out of touch with the reality of how something as simple as linking works. My fellow Canadians need to feel the impact to remind them of how awful this government is. Luckily, it seems like the writing is already on the walls...
That is a pretty general blanket statement. I don't agree with alot of the choices the current government has made, but I also don't believe there is an effective, credible alternative in Canada at the moment. The current front-runner's biggest claim to fame is that he is the last sock-puppet standing from the previous Harper administration, and has not yet released a substantial platform or initiative that should galvanize people besides "Trudeau bad" and "wokeness bad".
There is no single "front runner". The front runner is entirely dependent on the riding. That may describe the front runner in one particular riding, but there are 337 others where that is probably not the case.
Saying that Pierre Poilievre isn't the CPC front runner when polling indicates that the LPC is down in the polls, and we have an as yet undeclared election coming up is disingenuous.
No, Canadians don't elect the Prime Minister, and yes it is most likely that one of Trudeau or Poilievre will form a government after the next election, unless Trudeau steps down before or during the campaign starts.
Poilievre îs already the leader of the CPC. It would be quite odd to call him the front runner there when there is currently no race being run.
And there is never a race for the Prime Minister's position. If that was what "front runner" was in reference to, that would be nonsensical.
The only race Poilievre is likely to run any time soon, at least within the context of political races, is for the MP's position in the Carleton riding. I expect he really is bound to be the front runner there, but unless you live in said riding, he is of no relevance.
In my neck of the woods that's enough to make the majority think he walks on water. It's super gross.
That legislation and the recently passed one (senators and conservatives teaming up)... make one mad.
Between this law, Bill C-11, and Bill S-210 they have gotten off to a pretty good start.
But who’s going to save the our precious “Canadian culture” if JT doesn’t come to the rescue?!
I suspect after someone realizes they need Meta to disseminate the state-sponsored narrative to manufacture consent.
Oh well. This recent obsession with truth is quite strange to begin with[1].
Enlightened minds do not concern themselves with absolute truths, but rather focus on establishing models that can stand up to experimentation. The model does not even have to follow truths as long as it provides sufficiently accurate results.
[1] On second thought, it is not really that strange that we've seen that recent emergence. It is a great social device for nefarious actors to sway opinion in their favour – "I don't need to experiment because what I have before me is the truth!" There is a lot of incentive by those nefarious actors to promote truth seeking as being virtuous.
