(there is something poetic in having to read a story about an "underwater" fugitive who smuggled his magazines out, via teasing individual paras out of unpresented json)Now I need to find PDFs of the magazines for my magazine encyclopedia...
The first use of the term "Nazi" by the National Socialists occurred in 1926 in a publication by Joseph Goebbels called Der Nazi-Sozi ["The Nazi-Sozi"]. In Goebbels' pamphlet, the word "Nazi" only appears when linked with the word "Sozi" as an abbreviation of "National Socialism".
After the NSDAP's rise to power in the 1930s, the use of the term "Nazi" by itself or in terms such as "Nazi Germany", "Nazi regime", and so on was popularised by German exiles outside the country, but not in Germany.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NazismThe Gestapo and SS were organs carrying out Nazi policy. Nazi members were in Holland and elsewhere making the public statements about how people were to behave and what minorities were to report for transport and reeducation, etc.
The timeline here works.
Here are ~18k uses 1929-1933; the top hits do seem mainly to come from lefty publications, but it'd be news to me that places like Bad Godesberg, Detmold and Witten are not "in Germany":

After 1933 there is a distinct drop in published use of the term, and those who continue to use it seem to be in exile, so I guess the Nazis (like their modern descendants?) didn't care for the pejorative?
It all meshes with the claim that it was used as a slur in occupied Holland at the time of the OP story, the cartoonist in the attic, dspite the GP comment assertion that the term never existed until some post war "modern" usage.
Don't Be a Sucker, released 1947 (produced 1943):

(IMO still apropos today)
