This annecdote was referenced in yesterday's Chesterton's Fence submission[0]. Startup CFOs will universally grumble about such perks, but the competent ones know not to touch it, or only to tweak it in a way that's not going to piss anyone off (for example replacing the bottled water option in the vending machine with a water cooler to save on restocking). Aside from second order thinking there's a lesson here in hiring right. You don't need someone who'll mindlessly pursue low hanging fruit just to make a name for themselves.
