Of his several versions, such as found in ''The Things They Carried'' and his Esquire magazine contribution, this one is my favourite. To use O'Brien's line: ''This one wakes me up.''
I loved reading “The Things They Carried” many years ago in school, definitely a great read.
“The Things They Carried” - agree one of the best books I have ever read.
What I really like about his writing is that he conveys things that cannot be conveyed by mere words. ''How to Tell a True War Story'' is really a meta story in a sense. How words are inadequate to describe the beauty in a horrific event or the horror of certain mundane experiences that occur in war.
