They are switching to new infrastructure. It's been down since second half of November.

I am really curious to how much load the server have to handle in order to survive HNs hug of death

I mean, that site is just down occasionally. A bunch of auxiliary infrastructure is hosted by volunteers that aren't necessarily available 24/7. It's an issue.

Can I contribute with hosting somehow?

For the traffic D gets these days, it seems like hosting ti as static content on Netlify or somewhere would be viable for a low cost.
