US Senator: What Do Our Cars Know? and Who Do They Share That Information With?

We don't need a "much-needed letter to car manufacturers". We need laws and regulations which uphold privacy for the human right and dignity everyone deserves. Everything else is political theatre only.

Politics proceeds slowly. The first step for a tech aware politician like Sen. Markey is to raise awareness of the issues with his colleagues who otherwise have many other priorities. That's how laws get passed.

You are unbelievably naive if you think politicians are merely limited by their "awareness."

Step 1: "Raise awareness" of the issue

Step 2: Assure donors there are no more steps

That's how laws don't get passed.

I wish there was something like a data sinkhole you could add to a car. That would be cool.

Oops, I plugged a device into the CAN bus that pretends to be the router so it can't communicate out

US Companies: "You think privacy laws are a good idea right" We'll finance your re-election if you stop that"

Yes, before we have the facts we should try for sweeping laws that won't pass or pass but are easily flouted.

Laws are regulations are mandating data collection.

What we actually need is their absence.

It saddens me that we have gone so far into this age of extreme surveillance from things such as cars, without having anybody substantially asking these questions. But certainly, better late than never!

The actual letter: https://www.eff.org/document/markey-car-letter

A magnificently sci fi headline.

I didn't even notice until you pointed it out. Thank you. It seems so normal now.

What's the grammar rule behind these titles? They just look weird for me.

(Edit: rephrased)

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_case

I foresee it becoming a game show - "Our Cars: What Do They Know? Do They Know Things? Who Do They Share Them With? Let's Find Out!"

Literally everything should be opt-in by default, no matter what silicon valley says.

Then go from there.

Ah Senator Markey, seemingly the only one left in the House who actually tries to make laws

Answering your other question, yes you are shadow banned. I vouched for this one to revive it.

Looks like they were a smartmouth to the D and got it. New accounts getting uppity is likely correlated with low effort contributions.

Uppity? There’s a word that certainly doesn’t conjure any negative connotations

Okay!
