Meta Enhances Election Safeguards for 2024 to Tackle Misinformation

In 2024, over two billion people across significant democracies like the U.S., India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the European Union will participate in elections.

Meta Platforms, Inc (NASDAQ: META), recognizing the importance of these events, has outlined its comprehensive strategy for managing elections on its platforms, Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs, mentioned in the company blog. This approach involves significant investment in safety and security, with 40,000 personnel and over $20 billion allocated since 2016.

The strategy includes advanced AI usage and an extensive fact-checking network, covering misinformation in over 60 languages with nearly 100 partners worldwide.

Meta applied its approach to election integrity in recent elections in Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Argentina, and the U.S.

Their methods focus on preventing platform abuse and maintaining the integrity of electoral processes.

The company also offers transparency around political ads. Since 2018, political and social issue ads must include a disclaimer and undergo an authorization process, with a seven-year storage in the Ad Library.

Next year, advertisers must disclose the use of AI or digital alterations in certain ads.

Meta also implements a one-week block on new political and social issue ads before U.S. elections, a policy since 2020, to prevent last-minute unverifiable claims.

This block lifts the day after the elections. The company's policies combat election and voter interference, hate speech, and coordinated harmful activities.

Additionally, Meta labels state-controlled media and blocks their ads targeting U.S. users, enhancing transparency and preventing government-influenced misinformation.

Alphabet Inc's (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google launched similar image-customizing generative AI ad tools to prevent the perpetration of misinformation. TikTok and Snapchat owner Snap Inc (NYSE: SNAP) bar political ads.
