Fontforge is the tool I used to create and what I use to maintain my 3270 font, https://github.com/rbanffy/3270font.

It has that 1990's Unix workstation vibes, but, if I didn't like vintage tech, I wouldn't make a 3270 terminal font.

Macromedia Fontographer is what I used many years ago. This is a nice replacement. There is also Glyphs but don't use it enough to pay for it

FontForge has always, for the few times I have used it, been a janky but reliable piece of software, that somehow lets me get the job done. Would be nice to have a UI overhaul, however, it really does look and feel ancient.

That's been my experience too. Aesthetically it has "there's no way this is going to work" vibes, but time after time it pulls through.

As an occasional FontForge user I kinda want to see how slick some concept fontforge.ai would look and feel, but I'm fine with ancient looks as long as it works. For pretty much every software I'd really like to see some semi-intelligent fuzzy search prompt to quickly find interesting stuff on menus (I would love especially GIMP so much more if it had something this).
