There's not really a way to put this nicely, but vore is a terrible name. If you don't know, it's a surprisingly popular fetish category and not something I would ever want to type into a search engine.

Well. Somehow (or for some reason), GIMP managed to get away with it.

Though, the next crudest software name which comes to mind is "Git".

I would not be afraid to google those though.

Many folks in the community are uncomfortable with the name and have asked the project to change it, to no avail.

'Git', at least, while not particularly rude, was deliberate.

What's rude is highly regional though, I'm sure "git" could be considered very rude in some places while not at all in some. Just like "cunt" isn't as rude in some places as in others.

_Is_ git very rude anywhere, tho? As far as I know, it's very mild in the UK and Ireland, not really used elsewhere, but I may be missing somewhere.

Don't forget "Unix".

I bet most people who don't frequent tumblr/reddit et al don't have the slightest idea of what "vore" is. The internet is pretty large, and humans are pretty clueless on average.

People barely know what an address bar is for these days. It's certain a large amount is going to google for it, and then find out.

It's fair to be clueless, but not even googling a name before deciding to use it for your project is foolish.

There is _no way_ this is not deliberate.

They may have no idea, but if they go searching that they may find out if they’re unlucky.

Until they search for "Vore feeder" and arrive at very unexpected results. The welcome of those results may vary from person to person, though.

You've convinced me that's actually a good name

Given the goal of:

vore.website is free for anyone to use, and will never be turned into a vehicle for profit.

It's actually a brilliant name, what a way to keep away mainstream corporate interests

There's no way it isn't intentional. Many FOSS developers love dirty names.

They totally know. It's an application for consuming feeds called vore.

That was the first thing I thought when I read the title, and is the reason I did not click the link. I had the misfortune of being exposed to images of this sort by someone back in school and I'm not exactly desirous of experiencing that again.

They really should change the name.

Being provocative gets eyeballs. In this situation am I the chewer and the rss feed is the chewed? Which one of us is feeling aroused by it? The feeds? I hope it’s the feeds.

There is a difference between being kink friendly and exposing your kink to the public, including minors. There is a time and place for everything, and involving potentially unconsenting people in your kink by "letting your freak flag fly" is wrong and has nothing to do with being kink friendly.

Phaser has been consistent with their update title[1] for a decade now. Beats the mind numbingly sterile update of chrome and firefox I suppose.

I'm not sure cargo-mommy strikes me as a strong example. It appears to be specific to the kink, not some mainstream tool that ties in kink somehow.
