Meta begins charging for ad free access in EU

You need to make a choice to continue using Facebook

Laws are changing in your region, so we’re introducing a new choice about how we use your info for ads. You’ll learn more about what each option means for you before you confirm your choice.

Your choice will apply to the "accounts in this Accounts Center" [1].

Subscribe to use without ads: Subscribe to use your Facebook and Instagram accounts without ads, starting at €9.99/month (inclusive of applicable taxes). Your info won’t be used for ads.

Use for free with ads: Discover products and brands through personalized ads, while using your Facebook and Instagram accounts for free. Your info will be used for ads. Your current experience

Edit: Mobile seems unaffected for me, desktop site is dead end without answer. (also page text seems to be updating rapidly)

So meta got in trouble for not having the personal ads opt out by default, so they have to ask their users to opt in.

But instead of it just being opt in, the options are effectively

1. Opt in 2. Quit 3. Pay

I'm not sure that's quite right. There is effectively no "I want to see ads, but you cannot use my data to target"

Am I wrong?

Regarding advertisers i'm curious what they would be interested more in? users who pay for FB or ones who using it for free. I assume ones who pay. But they will be off limits. Interesting how this will evolve.

I wonder whether the average person ends up spending more than the requested €9.99/month on products and services they discovered through FB/IG and wouldn't have considered otherwise.

But does it remove spyware/tracking/surveillance? In fact spyware should be removed without any discrimination based on paying or not for it, otherwise it still breaks GDPR privacy laws.
