In practice though there are tons of politics involved and something like .su is supposed to be sunset but everyone is really careful not to mention .io Realistically I'm not sure there will ever be a consensus around what this. Too many diverging opinions.

.su still exists even though the Soviet Union is no longer a country, but .yu (Yugoslavia) was fully retired and migrated to .me and .rs in 2010.
