This is a common reaction from people who know absolutely nothing about 3d printed guns, or guns in general. Many modern handguns, like the ubiquitous Glock 17, are made of plastic. There are metal components (eg the barrel, the firing pin, trigger group) which are relatively easy to make by hand or can be easily purchased. US firearms regulation controls the 'shell' of the gun into which the other parts fit, but many components are unregulated, in part because existing gun owners often customize or replace worn parts.
