Great topic to think about. I suspect the colonies that eventually win the galaxy will be the ones that both maximize engineering prowess and minimize generation time.

Fun thought exercise, but I disagree with the assertion that mars settlement is a hard first requirement. Why not a series of larger scale satellite stations (think 100x ISS), or the moon?
