It's time to bust the 'calories in, calories out' weight-loss myth

Wheee! Let's all start making those mythical Perpetual Motion Machines!
Obviously, the human body is designed (evolved!) to run on as little energy as possible when food is scarce. It does that by reducing (NOT eliminating!) its energy requirements.
That's why reducing your food intake doesn't necessarily produce a loss in weight: As long as you're taking in more energy than your body's minimum energy requirement, you won't see any weight loss because your body's reduced energy requirement has kept pace with the reduction in energy available.
The article headline even said so: "more complex than at first glance". And every example they give does nothing more than adjust calories in or out.
Is it way harder to calculate calories in/out than it would seem? Absolutely! But that does not make the statement false.
