I suppose that not allowing Russia to massively increase their power is an important benefit well worth billions to the US.

I don't understand how Russia is considered powerful. Its got an economy the size of Italy. Three US states each have economies larger than Russia.

The US is light years ahead of Russia, economically, militarily and technologically.
