Lists generally don't make great submissions to HN, because there isn't enough specific information for discussion. Comments tend to be about the lowest common denominator of the items on the list, and this is usually pretty generic. It would be better to pick one of the most interesting items on the list and submit that instead.

people seem to find it of value

There's lots of value in things that don't work well on HN.

I'm going by the upvote counts, not opinion. Also, you should give examples.

Well, lists are one example. As to upvote counts, there's a whole literature on that

upvotes are not a measure of value but they are a pretty good proxy for opinion.

you've made my case. thank you.

If your case was 'lists don't work well on HN' and you intended to make it by posting a list on HN then I suppose yes.

Yes, that's a highly upvoted, highly generic thread most of which consists of either other lists or things to add to the list. That's exactly why these tend to get moderated off the FP - listmaking, while a noble pursuit, is not much of a conversation.

Of the same site. Perhaps you couldn't be bothered to check. Once again, thank you for proving me correct.

Wow, this is an awesome list. Some of the links point to some indepth articles.

I saw the title as "build your own twitter". -_-!

As a systems engineer, I really want to build my own X.
