This site is amazing!

Hummingbirds are neat in and of themselves. The typography is pleasant, the illustrations nice, the interaction streamlined, and the layout and look & feel just right.

Take the time to explore the rest of the site and his projects. This is a rare breed of a designer who through execution breathes new life into something relatively mundane.

Yes, c82.net is great. I visit the Werner's Nomenclature of Colors page relatively frequently.

The "making of" process—generating random points and then using them to position the bird illustrations at each point—does not make a lot of sense to me. The final bird positions are nowhere near the random points.

A possibly better approach would be to use Bridson's algorithm with a radius that roughly corresponds to the size of each bird image. You could reject points that are outside the overall shape.

I was looking through it thinking "Wow this is beautiful, reminds me of that Euclid one I saw a while back". Nicholas has done it again. Man doesn't miss

Bumble birds are amazing.

They're not really discussions without comments so just end up being links to nowhere.

Sadly people don’t seem to discuss hummingbirds on HN, yet they do post a lot about them.

Links to nowhere seems unfair, along with the downvote.

There's a convention of posting previous discussions so people can see previous discussion. If there's no discussion and you think the links themselves are interesting, you can just post the links.

I did post the links. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

...and advertised them as "Discussions on similar submissions", where no discussion took place. Just post the links, as parent recommended, rather than making readers go through the intermediate step of clicking an HN link. And then clearly label it as "other links about hummingbirds" rather than "Discussions...". :-)

2 of the links did have comments.

The bike shedding over 'discussions' versus 'comments' is amazing.

It's pretty much the HN convention, you can find lots of moderator and other comments about it. Posting links to previous significant discussions makes sense, posting links to links a lot less so.

I thought we were supposed to be talking about Humming Birds, not bike shedding a comment.

I have feeder outside my window. They come and go all day long. Beautiful birds really.

I think your critics have a point. I looked at the text of the links, then at the number of comments, and skipped all of them, because I'm mainly here for a c82 page, but I am a sucker for HN discussions. It was misleading, unless meant as a presage to the eventual discussions your linking will generate?

You put some effort into making that list, and if I were someone who felt inspired to post links about hummingbirds, this would be a helpful list indeed, saving me some time checking previous submissions. You're technically correct that you've linked to discussions with 0 or more comments. I appreciate your contribution.

did you know you can click the thread title to go to the original article? then learn something about these amazing creatures that are so much more important than humans, and then comment about it

I did know that! I also know you can post urls directly.
