To make it clear: this is only a proposal, not a regulation. It has a very low chance of making it into the books as it goes against the legal framework for free speech.

This minister is trying to destroy Israel’s democracy from within, and is not very well liked even by his neighbours who demonstrated outside his house every week until the war started.

Let me guess: asking why the IDF were busy helping settlers harrass Palestinians in the West Bank instead of manning the Gaza border hurts national morale.

Some ultranationalists would consider this behavior anti-Semitic

Here's a relevant reminder that 35 US states have anti-bds laws on the books punishing US citizens that choose not to buy products from Israel.

In many of those US states you can be fired from government jobs for refusing to buy Israeli products in your own personal life.

As someone completely unfamiliar with the media landscape in Israel, is Haaretz the one most likely to investigate/publish something that would be embarrassing to government, regardless of which one is in power? Any others?

Haaretz is generally considered left wing, but also the most “serious” of Israeli newspapers. There’s no comparable newspaper on the right (like the WSJ is in the US), and it’s probably a a little further left in Israeli politics than what the NYT is in American politics.

Hmm. It is a hard question. I think the closest comparison to it would be UK's Guardian. They have an axe to grind and an ideological stance you can gleam from almost every article, but it is hard to say that they would not publish things from their preferred government.

I base my answer on about 5 year occasional reading when checking regional news.
