Drew DeVault makes plea for evidence of Hacker News misbehavior

1. The community does most of the moderation. I'd counter Drew by asking him to find a better self-moderated online community. Dang only steps in when the community overreacts, in either direction.
2. @dang is one of the best mods out there, I've emailed with him many times, as both the good guy and the bad guy. Tell me another platform where you get a real human response about why you get temp banned or rate limited.
3. I do not see a problem with hate speech on HN. Those get flagged pretty quickly.
4. I've seen as many or more conservative voices "censored" than liberal
5. What he thinks of as censoring topics based on politics is more likely HN wanting to filter certain topics because we are tired of the same old arguments.
> From the Guidelines: Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

Anyone know why Drew is on a witch hunt?
Reading his replies on that post, I'd prefer he not hang out around here
here is @dang explaining what happened: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37708910
Seems like a negatively inclined individual, keen to see malice first

I feel like it is fit for purpose for a quick image but I'd never post one as an story in HN.
Often people post some link to 140 characters worth of pith and seem deluded that somebody is going to care. 15 years ago somebody would have posted a link to a blog, since the last 5 years it is some antiblog like Medium or LinkedIn or HackerNoon in the last year it is a link to X. It's like blogging today is a lost technology like Stonehenge or the Pyramids or something, right up there with SSRed HTML forms. At least it hasn't devolved to posting a link to a screenshot or stupid image meme yet (for some reason angry people think it is lot angrier or something to post text inside an image than to post text, if I ever get YOShInOn working as a Mastodon reader the first think I am going to do is block images where OCR finds a lot of text)
X is blocking the visibility of Xes that have external links, I really think HN should "just say no" to links to X, Mastodon, Threads, etc.
There is this bad idea people have you can reply to yourself to make an extended "thread" on X or some other platform but so far as I can tell it doesn't really work (people might see the thread, if they do they might see it the way you expect them to but PRO TIP they probably won't) and it's closely related to the other bad smell that people get really angry when people reply to their toots, like you ruined some masterpiece they wrote or something.

i dont, there is no reason to require this when something like:
<p> FOO BLABLABLA </p>
Works to communicate with people.
maybe you could help and post up the ASCII [with due credits of course] then everyone can read the submission.
I have nothing to do with mastedon, nor do I have an account. If you want an ASCII version, make it yourself, I could care less
everyone can read the discussion, still not sure what you are talking about
i can see yellow.
and i feel like i agree with, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37780903.
i would rather not allow code execution, from anything touching, https://fosstodon.org/@drewdevault/111149166582486132
Also, he quotes some US studies about 1% of rapist being convicted IN THE US and then argues about some even in Berlin. Justice system isn't the same worldwide and I guess its effectiveness would vary.
Such presupposed accusations are very bad for the community as a whole. And sometimes, even after a court verdict, they are still false, viz the tragically comic trial of card. George Pell (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/feb/26/rise-...).
Posts that admit to unpopular forms of hate get downvoted to oblivion.
Posts that admit to popular forms of hate are fine in general.
Disruptive hate is disruptive and moderated like any other disruption.
