UK Declares Morocco-UK Xlinks Green Energy Project of “National Significance”

> Lewis said the costs for the entire project were now estimated at between £20bn and £22bn but insisted the British start-up could build the scheme with “no government subsidy or handout” and that the project would be transformational. [1]

> As of May 2022, Xlinks had secured "up to" £40 million in development funding for the project, and it was reported to be close to appointing bankers to help raise the billions of pounds of investment funding required [2]

I estimate there is more than 50% chance that this thing is never built.

In addition, it seems that the cable would have a 3.5GW capacity so that's effectively how much this would deliver to the UK, at most. This is only slightly more than Hinkley C, and this seems a lot more expensive than building 3.5GW offshore wind capacity in the UK ("2.5-3 billion for 1 GW farm" [3])
