I'm not going to buy anything designed by Ive again. The Apple products in the era between Job's death and Ive's reign were awful by Apple's standards.

Apple products have gotten much better since he left. While some Apple products still take form over function, they are no where near as bad as when Ive was left unchecked at Apple. The 2016 - 2019 Macbook Pros were prime examples. Apple undid every single Macbook Pro design decision from that era.

From my work experience, a bold designer needs to be partnered with a strong product person. Otherwise, every project will end up as an impractical, idealistic art project.

Don't they still outsource design to his new firm?

No. When Ive left, he became a "consultant" to Apple. Basically, it was just a way to save face for both Apple and Ive. I don't think he's doing any work for Apple at the moment.
