If anything would rile the regulators, Google making Gmail compatible only with Chrome would do it.

I think there have been already notifications in Google's services that this will fully work only in Chrome.

I use Firefox with Gmail every day and have never seen such a message.

Not in Gmail, but for example, in Google Cloud webui.

Same. I even use gmail in the browser on Firefox/iOS, and all it does is give me a splash page saying the app is better, then I click through.
