A huge dose of skepticism is necessary when Intel speaks about their nodes since at least a decade and their 10nm fiasco, a node that was coming any next month for 7 years.

On the other hand some people (such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang) have said that they sampled the node and it's very promising.

So TSMC and Samsung run circles around Intel manufacturing for more than a decade now but that's only because they didn't care. Now they plan to overtake their rivals for a change so that's totally gonna happen!

Reading Intel's PRs is a comedy at this point. Benchmarks, plans, made up "turn around" story. I guess they still woe some investors with it though.

Intel were definitely resting on their laurels over the past decade and its uncertain whether the latest CEO has actually done anything to cleanup the bad culture.

If he did manage that, I'm optimistic the US government's investment in domestic chip production will give them the cash to attract top talent.

I thought this as well: "Intel is too important strategically that US government surely will help them one way or another". I still haven't bought stock though. It's not like Intel had cash problem when threats from AMD started to appear for example. I stopped following at some point but I don't think they suffer from insufficient funds (or ability to raise it) to attract talent today. You can't just buy company culture.

Competition is good, we don't want TSMC to pull an Intel and start resting on their laurels either.

But I'll believe it when I see it. Intel has been spewing a lot of PR nonsense for lack of actual competitive products.

So, they are at 7 and want to go through 3 process nodes in 2 years? Good luck, no one ever pulled that off.

They might pull an AMD and make nm a useless marketing term like amd did to GHZ.

Transistor measurements in nanometers has been more or less meaningless since the introduction of FinFETs over a decade ago, and IIRC it was TSMC that started the let's play funny business with nanometers affair. Today they are marketing terms and the different fabs try to align them somewhat, but have inherent conflicts of interest when it comes to overselling their tech. For example a TSMC N5 transistor is roughly 100x100x100nm in size as per https://youtu.be/gzgyksS5pX8?t=867.

They might as well pull a USB and make nm useless and confusing even to experts. 1.8nm Gen 2×1 SuperNode+, not to be mistaken with 1.8nm Gen 1×2 SuperNode.

They’re at 3nm. Not in full production yet but the process has been developed and meeting yield and performance targets.

Laptops on intel 4 are going to be shipping in a month, they are at this point only one node behind tsmc.

Ambitious plans are a good thing. Good luck to Intel.
