How Did Vanilla Become a Byword for Blandness?

I buy vanilla in bulk (a half pound at a time) and keep it in a large sealed mason jar. When I open the jar I get a big whiff of vanilla. Last year the seal on my jar failed and some beans dried out, so I made extract out of them.
