What I wish I’d known when I started Indie Hacking
I was broke from most of it and now my product Podsqueeze is making close to 12K MRR
So I decided to breakdown the most important lessons from my indie journey
I hope it helps other makers!
The Decision: Quitting a Job or Pursuing a Side Hustle? As an indie hacker, I've learned that starting from scratch requires 100% of one's time. It's not just about building the right product, but also learning how to be an entrepreneur. Traditional education often doesn't teach the necessary business skills, so dedicating time to learning and experimenting is crucial.
If you're considering this path, I recommend saving enough money to have a runway of at least one year.
This financial stability contributes to mental well-being and helps gain credibility with those around you who may not understand the unconventional lifestyle of an indie hacker.
The Marathon of Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is like running a marathon without knowing the distance to the finish line. Managing both financial resources and mental well-being throughout the journey is vital.
I've experienced anxiety and financial uncertainty when I first became unemployed, which emphasized the need to prioritize mental health and find ways to vent and reflect on my feelings. Avoid burning out and remember that rest is an essential part of the routine for a successful indie maker.
The Audience-First Approach
Instead of starting with an idea, I suggest starting with an audience or target customer. Understand their problems, language, and how to reach them. This makes it easier to create or find multiple problems to solve for that audience. Once you've identified an audience, it's important to find a problem to solve. Every product should solve a problem, and it's essential to understand if the problem is already being solved and how it can be solved better.
Building a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
Don't spend too much time on research. Instead, focus on building a minimum viable product (MVP) quickly.
What are the minimum set of features needed to solve the problem?
Finding Product-Market Fit
Finding a product that immediately gains traction and generates enthusiasm from users is crucial. Podsqueeze early users were patient and engaged, providing feedback and requesting features.
If after one month your product have not reached this positive abnormal growth.
Kill it and start a new one!
The Importance of a Co-Founder
Having a co-founder has been a game-changer for me. It provides support and allows for task delegation. Trust and mutual effort are crucial for the success of the partnership.
