Ask HN: Who can I discuss ideas/ projects with?

Glad i came across this platform of like-minded individuals. However, the people that i know are not interested in building something, at least from first glance.

Any advice?

Thank you in advance.

There's a bunch of Slack communities for founders, entrepeneurs, etc. Just search for "slack community entrepeneurs" and you'll find a few compiled lists.

I've been part of 1 or 2, and whilst you can find people to chat with there, these communitites are often owned and run by someone who wants to make money out of you so expect invites to webinars, promos, etc...

Slack communities can be incredibly useful. Find the active ones, some are more of ghost towns.

Which are your favorites?

When it comes to those that are public and in English, the Gophers Slack is quite good: https://forum.golangbridge.org/t/how-to-join-gopher-slack-ch...

Thanks.

Along these lines, is there a discord server for HN? Sometimes the free form conversations could be a nice change of pace to the more serious and topic based ones.

Not aware of any discord server for HN.

If I set up an unofficial one, would people be interested?

Edit: I decided to find out. Here's a link to an unofficial HN discord - https://discord.gg/ggCFRbGP2

I'd be interested to hear what people would hope for from an unofficial HN discord.

The server has the same guidelines as HN:

> On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

> Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

> Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; don't cross-examine. Edit out swipes.

I'm open to all forms of communication, thanks.

As the person running the unofficial HN discord, what are YOUR hopes for it?

1) More of the good parts of HN. Ask HN, Show HN type stuff.

2) Feedback before Show HN posts.

3) "Personifying" HN i.e. right now HN is kinda opaque, I use it all the time, and I have some friends that use it, but mostly it's a black box. Would be nice to be able to have an idea of a bit more of the personality of some of the people I'm interesting with on HN

I’m in love with personal projects, either from me or someone else.

You’re welcome to email me at the email in my profile if you have something you want to review or just want to bounce some ideas off someone

Thanks, will do.

Discord!

Seriously, there are loads of communities of super motivated people (many of them young) in the exact same position as you.

Some of the older folks on HN have a distaste for Discord and don’t see it as being a place for serious discussions, but I assure you, among the teenagers there are also super smart, always-online engineers and builders absolutely chomping at the bit to start talking projects.

if you're a bit older, IRC is the place to go.

As a millennial caught in between the IRC and Discord waves (I feel like a lot of us were just on Reddit), how can I find these Discord communities?

I feel the same. Discord is so closed off.

A lot of open source projects have Discord's - just pick a tech that you use and see if they link to one on their site or readme

You can start by sharing what you would like to build, what you've built before, etc.

Thanks, noted.

YC startup school might be something to look into: https://www.startupschool.org/

Thanks.
