I agree that transplants should be offered on an experimental basis to patients that are not on the verge of death. I might volunteer for such a study if I am unable to work.
Meanwhile, working up the list of people in critical condition towards the healthy is a good thing.
It is sad, but for countless Americans, the grim reality is that if they can't work, they become homeless very quickly. So in that case, offering themselves as guinea pigs makes perfect sense. They simply don't have the financial resources to enjoy those other things.
I don't want to get into a mud-wrestling match about facts and figures. But I have to tell you that from the perspective of basically any American, this statement is clownish. You may want to deepen your sophistication on the topic a little.
Like, as a developer, if I develop a condition that makes me unable to hold down any kind of job in the field, it probably also prevents me from drawing, gaming and reading to the extent that I enjoy doing right now.
As such, I'd probably be more than willing to sign up for a study that might help me be able to get closer to the way I am now, even if I could afford to live without it.
