Microsoft Lost the API War (2004)

What exactly is the benefit of removing the word "How" from the title, "How Microsoft lost the API War"?

I believe HN does it automatically, although it probably shouldn't

Where this causes an issue with a title, email the mods: hn@ycombinator.com

(I've NOT done so in this case as we're now 4 days on, but anyone else is welcome to do so, and titles can be changed fairly late in the game.)

> this is almost as much work as implementing Windows itself, something which took Microsoft thousands of person-years. And if you make one tiny mistake or leave out one function that an application needs, that application will crash.

Since 2004, we now have Proton which does very well to run most Windows games on Linux.

OP is from 2004

Yeah that's pretty important information!

It's fascinating, though, to read it from 2023 and judge how astute the observations were or weren't.

Please edit title to include the fact that this was published in 2004.
