They were extremely bullish with the database project when they wanted to use the name for their browser. They were of course backed by the huge AOL legal team at the time and did not shy away from using it.
Without diminishing the hard work the developers have put in to build a decent browser, I am and always will be sceptical about Mozilla. I think something happened to their culture during the AOL era and it's just not the same organization anymore.
I have sympathy for the database project too. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to use it.
I suspect it took as long as 10 months because Mozilla already felt bruised from already having to change the name from Phoenix, due to a trademark dispute from Phoenix Technologies.
Nineteen years is plenty of time to forgive. You might even find the time to try Firebird SQL, instead of complaining about an ancient naming collision.
Joking aside, it's not a grudge I hold but a bad taste I still remember. I think Mozilla is doing a lot of questionable things today and I see the breaking point as the AOL takeover. Thus the firebird thing is still something I remember.
It's interesting you bring up the phoenix name issue. They should have been much more understanding after going through that ordeal and not bully another established open source project.
