There is a datasheet out there for the 32-bit successor to the 65C816, the never-produced 65C832.

Has anyone ever written an emulator for this? I am no expert on this but isn't there enough info in there?

It could be run on a $5 Raspberry Pi Pico these days, and used as a plug-in accelerator for a 65xx system. (Akin to a PiStorm.) Maybe someone could even do an FPGA version...

The 65816 was also the CPU of the Super Nintendo or Nintendo Super Famicom video game system.

And the Apple II GS.

The 65C265, unlike the 65816 which it's based on, has a pretty bizarre boot sequence where you need to put the string "WDC" at 0x8000 if you want to keep the processor from booting into its built-in monitor ROM.

That's actually the onboard monitor ROM doing that. It will hand off to your ROM if it sees that signature. It's analogous to how, say, the Commodore 64 hunted for cartridges (if it saw "CBM80" at $8004, it used $8000 as a vector and ran the cartridge ROM instead of entering BASIC).

No mention of 'rosetta' for a modern GS/OS though.

Scot also has a really nice Forth for the 65c02. Comes with great docs, and is pretty easy to adapt to all kinds of 65c02 based computers. I had it running on a home soldered project for a while and it was great fun. Check out his GitHub if you want to play around with it.

I learned assembly in high school on the 65816. 5 stars, would do it again, glad to see my kid can too if he'd like to.
