CFS magnets are smaller because they're able to use the newer-est tape for it, but if LK-99 turns out to be a success it'll help them make things even more compact.
I really hope CFS succeed, their idea of creating a smaller tokamak with much stronger magnets just sounds right inside my head. I don't know anything about fusion except the basics, but oh my god is it exciting to watch from a distance.
