Ask HN: Is it okay to put ads on your personal blog
How do you feel about putting ads on your personal tech blog in order to generate some revenue if you receive good monthly visits

My take about it is this. If you pick a topic you think is interesting you'll likely wind up picking one of those topics like programming or anime that monetizes poorly. (like 1/10 or less of average!) If you had a huge list of possible topics and threw a dart to pick one at it you'd get average results.
Either way you need a lot of traffic to make significant amounts of money: it's one thing to have people think less of you and be making $500 a month, it's another thing to have people think less of you and be making $5.
what I mean is that why they generate less revenue compared to other topics

(Couldn't find that one with Google but Bing found it just fine!)
Open source devs don't buy software, Microsoft culture devs have an MSDN subscription and already paid for everything from Microsoft.
Another problem is there are just so many programming blogs.
