Right, which they didn't cancel, they sold and assured that your domains didn't just disappear.

Because DNS registrars have a binding contract with ICANN regarding things like going out of business.

It's not quite Google-specific, but many of Google's free services do tick a lot of the checkboxes. Gmail is at least 15.
