Van Gogh's Artistic Breakthrough

Van Gogh wrote that with The Night Café he
tried "to express the idea that the café
is a place where one can ruin oneself, go
mad, or commit a crime".
Were cafés different back then?A cafe is a fine place, unless you are out of work, friendless, with nothing productive to occupy your attention. Then the gap between what you are allowed to do (buy food, make pointless chit-chat, wait for something interesting to happen) and what you want to do (anything!) grows.
