Whatever it is, I don't need to earn crypto while browsing the web. I want to like brave, but it jumped the shark a long time ago.

It sounds like it's simply a wallet, not that I personally want that in a browser at least not yet, not "earning" (do you mean mining).
I'm talking about getting paid in BAT coin for looking at ads they hijack on other peoples websites.
That's not how it works though. Brave blocks ads by default, but it doesn't insert ads on any websites. It has some separate ads you can enable to get paid, but they are either on the browser start page or in system notifications.
You know that's not true, right?
Sometimes it worries me that we form opinions from the opinions that aren't even ours.
It's opt-in by the way, not opt-out. This isn't Chrome.
